On last Tuesday, before the whole, crane incident, I got a call about a cat in Dunmanway. This woman told me she was moving house literally that day and a scrawny black cat had appeared. Starving, with a huge gash on the back of his neck she took pity on him and fed him. In desperation she rang round and ended up with my number. It was only one more and shouldn't before long, right? So Casey arrived.
Upon veterinary inspection he has a nasty cut on his neck, this was cleaned and should heal up fine. Other than that poor Casey is thin and his coat is moth-eaten. Suprisingly upon exam he is castrated. Judging from his timid response and shy reactions, I think he was a pet that someone either dumped or simply left behind. Sure cats can look after themselves, can't they? No they can not. Cats, especially those who live as a pet can not survive without human help. They are used to being fed on a regular basis and suddenly that stops. How disgusting it is that people are still under the illusion that cats 'will be fine'!
They will NOT be fine. They become starving and sick, they get lost, chased, hunted by people and stray dogs. If they are lucky so kind soul will feed them and if they are reaaly lucky they may wander in to a new home. Many are not lucky and most are simply left to rot. Someone else's problem.
